Geography Awareness Week 2023

This year marks the 36th anniversary of National Geography Awareness Week! It came about after Congress recognized the importance of geographic knowledge in an increasingly interdependent world and President Reagan signed the legislation in 1987 implementing it. Geography Awareness Week (GAW) is an annual event typically celebrated during the third week of November each year and promotes geographic literacy, education, and geographic skills in making informed decisions to address challenges such as climate change, urban planning, and resource management.

This year's theme is "The Power of Place" and allows the Geography and Environmental Science Department to remind the Hunter community of the influence that geography has played in all parts of our lives and how geography can be incorporated into many fields of study. Geography is not just about maps but also about understanding the complex relationships between people, places, and the environment.
