New York State has a target for 70% of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. Currently, the state obtains approximately 30% of its electricity from renewable sources, primarily hydropower. Most new renewable energy will come from solar power, requiring changes to the management of acres of land, particularly in rural areas. This study looks at the differing responses of local communities to such large-scale solar installations and the social, economic and physical factors influencing these responses.

Jessica Stretton received her Masters’ degree in Geography and Environmental Science from Hunter College. Her thesis examined the distribution and drivers behind solar photovoltaic adaption in New York State. This study, which focuses on large-scale installations, is a continuation of that work. She has a lifelong interest in environmental and land-use issues.
