ABOUT SPEAKER: Carolina Behe received a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Hunter College under the CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies in 2010. Carolina received an MA in Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2011 and began working for ICC that same year. For the following 11 years, Carolina worked as the Indigenous Knowledge and Science Advisor for the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC). Carolina’s work within ICC was diverse throughout this time, ranging from various climate change topics to management and policy. Most of her work focused on food security, food sovereignty, co-production of knowledge, monitoring, and equitable involvement of Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge, all from an Indigenous perspective. Carolina has worked continuously through partnerships with Indigenous communities across the community, regional, national, and international scales. This work has included research, facilitation, negotiations, diplomacy, and policy shaping.

Carolina was drawn to this work because it allowed her to work within two knowledge systems, Indigenous Knowledge and science. Indigenous Knowledge takes a holistic view and sees how many pieces fit together. Working with this understanding and way of knowing, combined with science, will aid in making adaptive ecosystem-based decisions. Recently, Carolina has transitioned from her position with the ICC and joined the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries as the Cultural Resource Coordinator for these same reasons. Within her new role, Carolina will work within a team to strengthen and support Indigenous engagement.
