Guest Lecturers on Hazards & Disasters
Friday, May 9, 2025
1:00 PM - 2:15 PM
Room 1022 HN
Professor Ramiro Campos extends a special invitation to all current majors, minors, and department instructors to a unique set of guest lectures on Friday, May 9, as part of the Regional Geography of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean course—a class he has proudly taught at Hunter College since 2007.
To conclude the semester, the course will focus on Hazards and Disasters, and instead of Professor Campos delivering the lecture, three special guests will be presenting their insights and research:
- Stephanie Chernyavsky, a graduating Geography major, who will share part of their Capstone Research on "Climate Migration from the Dry Corridor of Central America."
- Frankie Placencia, a Greenbelt Society senior, who will briefly discuss the possible effects of climate change on Hurricane Otis, October 2023
- A Physics major involved with the Greenbelt Society who will present on the physical destruction caused by the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake.
Each student presentation will be approximately 10 minutes long.
The session will continue with a 30–40-minute featured lecture by Dr. Ruth Trumble, a proud alum of the department and now Assistant Professor of Global Studies and Geography at Hofstra University. Dr. Trumble will present: “There Are No Natural Disasters: A Critical Look at U.S. Disaster Response in Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria (2017).” Dr. Trumble specializes in disaster preparedness, and her current research focuses on disaster response.
Professor Campos hopes you will join to support these engaging speakers and thought-provoking discussions. For more information, contact Professor Campos at rcampos@hunter.cuny.edu.
