American Fact Finder is the US Bureau of Census on-line service that provides access to source for population, housing, economic, and geographic data. It includes data from or provides links to decennial population census data, economic census, American community survey, population estimates, and other information. It also provides interactive internet-based mapping facility.

The Economic Census of the US Census Bureau provides a detailed portrait of the Nation's economy once every five years, from the national to the local level. It covers all domestic non-farm business establishments, other than those operated by governments. Most reports are confined to businesses with paid employees.

UNEP/GRID Global population data sets (public United Nations datasets)

USGS (United States Geological Survey) - major provider of the US datasets digitized from the topographic maps and other sources.

GDT (commercial). Topological street networks, census data files, population projections.

New York

NYC Department of City Planning - Bytes of the Big Apple.  Some datsets are available for free download. 

New York State Government Information Locator Service. Follow the link to NYS Geographic Information System Clearinghouse - The Clearinghouse was established to disseminate information about New York's Statewide GIS Coordination Program and to provide access to the New York State GIS Metadata and Data Repository.
