DOWNLOADING CLASS DEMOS

We will often use class demos (hands-on computer demonstrations). All datasets for class demos are compressed into sefl-extracting files. You can get the demo data in two ways.

1)      The first is to find the dataset on \scratch\gissg\demos and

2)      the second is to download it from BB (http://bb.hunter.cuny.edu, see BB for instructions under assignments).

Then you should extract the data into your U:\gissg\compex folder (or any other folder such as a removable disk or your home computer). The default path for extracting files is to your U: drive but you can change it during the extraction process.

Remember that you do not need to keep all these files forever. Delete them once you are finished with the demo script. You can always download the dataset again.

Data paths for class demos

Source: \scratch\gissg\demos
Target: U:\gissg\compex

Creating target path on your U: drive

If you have not done so yet, create a folder U:\gissg\compex on your U: drive (C: drive if working on a home computer)

Downloading demo data in the lab

The dialog box will display the target path for extracting the data. This path should read U:\gissg\compex

Downloading demo data from home (or lab)

While at home (or in the lab too), you can download the data from the course webpages.
Go to the webpage that stores links to data sets. Remember that the page address is case sensitive.

DOWNLOADING MASTERY EXERCISE DATA

Finally, you need to create one more project environment file to your mastery exercise data set.

That is all. All your project files (this mastery exercise files) will be kept together in this folder and you will read from and write new data to this folder. Because you should always choose a different name for an output file, your input and intermediate files will be saved as well.
Other mastery exercises will be upzipped into different folders. Make sure that you choose the correct project environment file for each mastery exercise.
