This packet contains all information about the application deadlines, requirements, and necessary forms. Also, consult Hunter College Office of Graduate Admissions for admissions regulations.

If you are interested in pursuing GIS while in our program, you must have at
least an introductory statistics course as part of your background. If needed,
you may take STAT113 at
The department of Geography offers a limited number of teaching assistantships and research assistantships. If you are interested in these assistantships, please indicate so in your statement of purpose and describe the appropriate research and teaching skills you have.
You may also decide to start taking classes as a non-matriculated student and then transfer these credits towards your MA degree. Please note, however, that only a limited number of credits earned in a non-matriculated status can be transferred and it is important to submit the application for matriculation on time. The GIS certificate program is a non-degree program. Students accepted into this program are not eligible to financial aid or student visa. No credit transfers are allowed for the non-degree program.

The application form is the same as the form for Hunter graduate programs.
In your statement of purpose please describe: 1) your objectives in the GIS certificate program, 2) your training and experience as relevant to GIS and 3) how you meet or plan to meet the prerequisites (see below).
Please provide the receipts for courses in progress.
Please make sure that you meet the following admission requirements:
1. The student must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited
institution, comparable in standard and content to a bachelor's degree from
2. The student must demonstrate the ability to pursue graduate work successfully. In general, the minimum requirements for consideration are an average of B minus in the undergraduate record as a whole and an average of B in the major.
3. The student must satisfy the course prerequisites for the certificate program:
· Introduction to Mapping Science (GTECH 710) or equivalent,
· an introductory computer programming course,
· elementary statistics.
If you meet requirements 1 and 2 but lack necessary background, you should take the prerequisite courses prior to starting the GIS certificate curriculum. Please indicate in your application whether any of these courses are in progress. At Hunter, you may take:
· An undergraduate STAT113 to meet the statistics requirement.
· continued education introductory programming courses, including C++, Java, or VB
· GTECH710 at the department of Geography. You also may take an undergraduate GTECH210 (Introduction to mapping sciences) that will also count as a prerequisite to all our GIS courses.
The above courses can be taken in non-matriculated status. Please note that among other requirements, you need 21 undergraduate credits in geology, physical geography, earth science, or environmental science, including geographic techniques (GIS) to qualify for the admission into this program. If you lack these credits, you may take such classes at the Department of Geography as a non-matriculated undergraduate student.
