Travel to Hunter College and Hotel
Information
The conference will take place at the Department of Geography, Hunter College.
For general instructions on how to travel to Hunter College and helpful
maps, see Geography Department, Hunter College website (http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/directions.html)
For additional information about New York, hotels, and traveling in New
York, see AAG
2001 website at Geography Department, Hunter College. This is a great
site and it is working now. More detailed instructions are provided below.
This page uses links to maps on these two sites.
The New York
City tips
New York City has five boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn,
and Staten Island (See the Regional
map with the location of airports). The conference hotel, New York
City Hilton, is located in Midtown
neighborhood of Manhattan, while Hunter College is in the Upper East Side
of Manhattan (see map
of Hunter College location and this MapQuest
map). Manhattan's Avenues run (almost) North-South and their numbering
increases from East to West. Manhattan's streets run (almost) East-West;
their numbering increases from South to North; and street names include
"East" or "West" depending upon where in Manhattan they are located. In
addition to street addresses, locations in New York often include the closest
intersections or neighboring streets and avenues. Thus, New York Hilton
and Towers is at 1335 Avenue of Americas (also called 6th Avenue) between
W 53rd and W 54th Streets.
Subway Tips
Subway trains are differentiated by subway line color and train number/letter.
Different trains that run on the same color line (e.g., trains #6, #4,
and #5 on the green line) make different stops and might go in different
directions. Trains go either Uptown (North) or Downtown (South). Hunter
College is located on stop "68th St./Hunter College" stop of
train #6 of the green line (see the MTA
subway map of NYC). Each ride (no matter where you go) is $1.50. You
can pay by tokens or use an MTA prepaid card that might save you some money
(information about the Metrocard is at http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/metrocard/index.html).
How
to find Hunter College, the Department of Geography, and the Conference
Room
Hunter College is located at 695 Park Avenue at 68th street, just a few
blocks east of Central Park. This wealthiest neighborhood of the city (which
does not reflect on Hunter College's student body or professor salaries)
is accessible by subway and bus and is very safe.
You need to take #6 green train (NOT #4 or
#5) to the "68th st/Hunter College" station.
The #6 train (green line) runs along Lexington Avenue and stops right at
the corner of Lexington Avenue and E 68th street (see subway
map from MTA). The Department of Geography is at the North Building
of Hunter College (see
Hunter
College map), which is on the north-west corner of this intersection
(traffic on Lexington Avenue runs south). It occupies the block between
East 68th and E 69th Streets and between Park Avenue
and Lexington Avenue.
The conference will take place in Room 1022 of the Hunter North Building.
Enter Hunter North from 68th Street through a doorway to the Sylvia and
Danny Kaye Playhouse and turn left. At the end of the hallway make a right
and then make a left into a large hallway with elevators. Take an elevator
to the 10th floor. When you come off the elevator make a left and head
to the blue doors of the Geography Department. After you come through these
doors, make a right and go to the end of the hallway. Room 1022 is right
before the glass doors of our CARSI lab on your right. Also, follow the
posted signs to the GIS and CGR conference.
Directions
from New York Hilton, the Penn Station, and airports
Directions from conference hotel
Walking
The New York Hilton and Towers (1335 Avenue of Americas) hotel is located
a few blocks south of Central Park between W 53 and W 54 streets. Walking
would take 20-30 minutes depending on how fast you walk. Walk 4 long blocks
east on 54th street to Lexington Avenue and then walk 15 short blocks north
on Lexington Avenue (against traffic). You will see Hunter's skywalk connecting
West and East buildings from far away. You can also walk North along 5th
Avenue bordering the Central park, or residential Park Avenue, or fancy
Madison Avenue. Lexington Avenue is busy and fun.
Subway
Subway is the best way to travel around New York (unless you can walk).
See MTA subway
info.
-
From the hotel, walk one block east to the subway station at 5th
Avenue and 53rd Street. Take the Uptown E train (blue line) or Uptown F
train (orange line) to 51st St./Lexington Ave (1 stop) and transfer
to the Uptown 6 train (green line). Exit to the street level at 68th
street/Hunter College stop (2stops). You can also walk 1 block west from
the hotel to the subway station at 7th Avenue and 53rd Street and take
the Uptown E to 51st/Lexington Avenue (2 stops).
-
Or, walk to train 6 (green line) at 51st street/Lexington Avenue
(two short blocks south and four long blocks east) and take uptown 6 train
to 68th St/ Hunter College.
NOTE: Due to subway construction, F trains might be detoured trough
63th street tunnel on the weekends and nights (the schedule says at nights
only 10pm-5am but you never know). This means that Uptown F trains will
stop at 63rd street/Lexington Avenue instead of 51st/Lexington Avenue.
Because there is no transfer to #6 train at this stop, you would have to
walk 5 short blocks north to 68th street (5 minutes). So, if you do not
mind walking, it is probably easier to walk to the subway station at 51st
street/Lexington Avenue from the hotel and take Uptown 6 train. #6 train
should run as usual. Uptown E should run normally. See Weekly
Subway Service Advisories.
Taxi cab
Taxi cab ride from New York Hilton to Hunter College is approximately $6
plus tip.
Driving
Street parking is free on Sundays but is impossible to find. Parking garages
are available throuhought the area but are very expensive.
Directions from the Pennsylvania Train Station in
Downtown Manhattan
Pennsylvania station is underground at 34th Street between 7th and 8th
Avenues. You can enter the subway without exiting to the street level.
Follow the signs to the blue E train. Take the Uptown E train to 51st
St./Lexington Ave and transfer to the green Uptown 6 train. Exit at the
68th st./Hunter College station.
Directions from airports
Shuttle service to Manhattan is available from JFK and LaGuardia airports.
Taxi ride prices from these airports to Manhattan are fixed at $25 plus
tip and bridge tolls.
