Projections based on a plane

Planar projections produce maps on which the longitude lines converge at the north pole and radiate outward. The latitude lines appear as a series of concentric circles.

A planar projection is created by passing a light source through the earth onto a flat surface (plane). In this example, the plane touches the earth at the north pole.
