Homework 1:  

From Chapter 1: Critical-Thinking Problem - Write a 1-2 page (typewritten please!) essay on either question 1. or question 2.

Assigned on Tuesday, Sep. 6.  Due in one week, Tuesday, Sep. 13. 

Homework 2:  

            From Chapter 2: Critical-Thinking Problem 2 and 4.  

Assigned on Tuesday, Oct. 11 - Due in one week, Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Homework 3:  

1.      From Chapter 4: Critical-Thinking Problem 2.

2.      The Coriolis Effect: (a) explain in your own words this effect, (b) explain the easterlies and westerlies that are observed in the Southern Hemisphere, (c) explain the geostrophic wind in the Southern Hemisphere.  Use sketches to aid your words!!

3.      The Monsoon Circulation: use map sketches to explain the processes that drive the Southeast Asian monsoon. Compare to sea-breeze circulations.

Assigned Reading: Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Environmental Issues (Eleventh Edition, McGraw Hill, 2004), edited by Thomas A. Easton. 

            1.  Introduction.  Environmental Issues: The Never-Ending Debate.

            2.  ISSUE 9.  Should Society Act Now to Forestall Global warming?

                        YES: George Marshall and Mark Lynas, from New Statesman (December 2003).

                        NO: Stephen Goode, from Insight on the News (April 27, 2004)

Assigned Writing:  An essay that contains a summary-review of the main points discussed in the introduction and a critical review of the contents of ISSUE 9.  In your critical review, highlight the main arguments advanced by these authors and discuss how (un)sound these might be.  Make sure that you point at the evidence or lack of that these authors refer to, and discuss this in the light of what you now know from this course.
