Lab 1: Locating Suitable Regions for Tigers in Thailand

In order to establish suitable regions for Tigers in Thailand, several criteria were met to result in the map provided here:

  1. "The protected area must contain, at least in part, any of the following vegetation types: Dipterocarp, Evergreen, Mixed Deciduous, Non-Forest, and Pine Forest."
  2. "The protected area cannot be within one mile of a road."
  3. "The protected area must have the following combination of preys: either Sambar or Eld Deer, and Gaur with a value not more than one."
  4. "The roundness of the protected area(s) is less than 1800."

The analysis resulted in two small regions in the north central part of Thailand. The Eastern-most region is situated amongst Evergreen Forest and Non-Forest landcover, with an area of 40,646,700 meters sq., with a roundness of 896. This region contains, at the time of the animal inventory, 2 tigers, 1 Sambar, 2 Eld Deer and 1 Gaur.

The Western region, is all Non-Forest landcover, with an area of 3,194,380 meters sq., with a roundness of 371. At the time of inventory, no tigers were present, with 1 Sambar, 2 Eld Deer and 1 Gaur.
