The Conference Events of David Stolarz as the ASPRS National Student Activities Committee Chair

Through the early participation of a particular ASPRS staff member, a reasonable turnout occurred for the committee meetings. His enthusiasm brought a number of willing participants to the table. When that staff member changed jobs, no one at headquarters could fill his shoes. On my own, I struggled to construct a committee by attempting to e-mail region directors, compose letters, and e-mail students directly. These impersonal approachs proved ineffectual. The follow-up required to coerce participation out of students on the national level is beyond one person's capability. Still, the student activities committee served as a planning forum for the events described below.

For the future, my conclusion is that for optimal efficiency, the direct participation of professors is essential to constructing a national student activities committee. Thereafter, e-mails, web sites and letters can serve a supporting function, while the dedication of professors might best be enticed through student chapter formation. Finally, region directors can play a vital role to ensure the continued success of student chapters by providing ongoing interaction.
It was my hope that career guidance events at the national conferences would be continued by an up-and-coming ASPRS student-leader, or committee of student leaders.
