Temperature Measurements

  • Measuring Temperature - the average kinetic energy of atoms or molecules in a substance

    • Fahrenheit - (Interval scale)* proposed in 1724 by Daniel Fahrenheit. 0oF was defined by a mixture of ice, water and ammonium chloride, a salt. 100oF was considered body temperature.
    • Celsius (Interval scale)*
    • Kelvin (ratio scale)**

Another comparison of the three temperature scales.

* Interval scales tell us about the order of data points, and the size

of the intervals in between data points.

** A ratio scale is an interval scale with a true zero point.

Why is this funny?

Q: Did you hear about the man who was cooled to absolute zero?
A: He's 0K now.
