What is a hurricane?
A storm center characterized by low pressure and thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain.
ocean water evaporates/condenses - sensible to latent to sensible heat changes.
AKA typhoon, and tropical cyclone
Factors that can lead to the formation of a hurricane:
water temps of at least 80
F to a depth of 150 feet. Helps create unstable atm resulting in convection and thunderstorms.
rapid cooling with height (high DALR) helps create lots of condensation ( latent heat --> sensible heat) which powers storm.
low amounts of wind shear. High wind shear disrupts the storm's circulation.
need Coriolis effect to deflect winds blowing towards the low pressure center and creating a circulation.
need a pre-existing system of disturbed weather:
- sustained winds less than 39 mph.
- sustained winds of 39-74 mph - name is assigned
- sustained winds greater than 74 mph
