Biological Classification

  • Method of scientific taxonomy or classification used to group and categorize organisms into groups such as genus and species. The groups are known as taxa (singular: taxon)
  • Modern method (Cavalier-Smith) has six kingdoms
    • Plants
    • Animals
    • Protozoa - have a nucleus (eukaryotes) and are a single cell
    • Fungi - eukaryotes such as yeasts, molds and mushrooms. Cell wall contains chitin rather than cellulose in plant cells
    • Bacteria - prokaryotes (no nucleus membrane) found in most habitats on the planet including extreme environments
    • Chromista - eukaryotes which include all algae
