Aridisols

Are CaCO3-containing soils of arid regions.

There is some subsurface horizon development.

They are dry most of the year with limited leaching.

Aridisols contain subsurface horizons in which the following can accumulate:

  • clays
  • calcium carbonate
  • silica
  • salts
  • gypsum

These materials are usually leached from the soil in moister climates.

These soils commonly contain a silica- and CaCO3-cemented duripan at a shallow depth.

Annual precipitation is less than 10".
