Mt. Pelee - 1902

Mt. Pelee - 1902

  • St. Pierre, a port town on the Caribbean island of Martinique
  • about 7 km south of the volcano
  • the volcano began emitting steam and lapilli
  • the magma was quite viscous and a spire rose from the conduit
  • on May 8th the spire cracked, releasing the immense pressure of gasses
  • a pyroclastic flow (1000oF+) swept down the flank
  • partly riding on a cushion of air
  • reached speeds of 300 km per hour and slammed into St. Pierre
  • within moments all of the towns buildings were flattened
  • all but a few of its 28,000 inhabitants were dead of incineration or asphyxiation
