Here is a list of commonly used fuzzy tolerance values for a given data entry scale and the units used for storing coverage coordinates. As discussed previously, these values represent the best possible coverage resolution at these scales.
Initial Scale for Digitizing | Digitizing (Map) Fuzzy Tolerance | Ground Equivalent | |
---|---|---|---|
A | 1:250,000 | 0.002 inches | 41.660 feet 12.700 meters |
B | 1:100,000 | 0.002 inches | 16.620 feet 5.080 meters |
C | 1:63,360 or 1:62,500 |
0.002 inches | 10.560 feet 3.210 meters |
D | 1:24,000 | 0.002 inches | 4.000 feet 1.219 meters |
E | 1:6,000 | 0.002 inches | 1.000 feet 0.304 meters |
The formula for calculating fuzzy tolerance on the ground for different map tolerances at different scales is:
scale = fuzzy tolerance / x
For a map tolerance of 0.002 incles and a scale at 1/250,000:
1 = 0.002" 250,000 x
x = 500 inches
OR
x = 500" * 1" 12"
x = 41.6 ft
