Here is a list of commonly used fuzzy tolerance values for a given data entry scale and the units used for storing coverage coordinates. As discussed previously, these values represent the best possible coverage resolution at these scales.

  Initial Scale for Digitizing Digitizing (Map) Fuzzy Tolerance Ground Equivalent

A 1:250,000 0.002 inches 41.660 feet
12.700 meters
B 1:100,000 0.002 inches 16.620 feet
5.080 meters
C 1:63,360
or
1:62,500
0.002 inches 10.560 feet
3.210 meters
D 1:24,000 0.002 inches 4.000 feet
1.219 meters
E 1:6,000 0.002 inches 1.000 feet
0.304 meters

The formula for calculating fuzzy tolerance on the ground for different map tolerances at different scales is:

scale = fuzzy tolerance / x

For a map tolerance of 0.002 incles and a scale at 1/250,000:

	        1     =    0.002"
             250,000         x
		x = 500 inches
		      OR
		x = 500" * 1"
                       12"
		x = 41.6 ft
