The stratigraphic chart shown above is very generalized and is unable to accomodate all the names assigned to rock units in the the region. It also does not include detail about sequence chronology, hiatuses in sedimentation, or igneous or metamorphism events. It is only intended to show the general ages of named units that crop out around the New York Bight area, that form prominent geomorphic features in the region, or are a significant source of sediment to the beaches in the Bight area. For more details check out Isachsen, etal., (1991), Rogers, etal., (1990), and Lyttle & Epstein, (1987) in the beginning sections of the bibliography for this web site.
