Managing Your Account Passwords                                                    Last updated: 09/02/2005
All users are assigned two accounts in the Department, a PC account for use with the Windows  PC's and a Unix/Linux account. We do this because there isn't a way, at this time, to have a single account to access  computers with the two different operating systems.

You can use the same password for both your PC and Unix accounts (following the proper password-making rules, of course) but remember, if you change the password on one account, you don't change the password on the other.

Changing your PC password
To change your PC password press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys at the same time. This brings up the Windows Security dialog box. In the lower left corner id the change password button. Left-click on the button and follow the instructions.

Changing your Unix password
Log onto your Unix/Linux account using SSH to go to earth.geo.hunter.cuny.edu. At the Unix prompt, type the following command:

                                yppasswd

and follow the instructions. See below for an example of the questions asked. When you enter your old and new passwords, nothing will echo on the screen (your password is a secret and we don't want any bad people looking over your shoulder sniffing passwords).
