I am pleased to welcome you to another semester at Hunter College. Below you will find a wide variety of career development and department information that will help you broaden your professional exposure and streamline the completion of your educational objectives.

Professional Societies

The American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM)
comprises 8,500 members in four organizations: The American Association of Geodetic Surveying (AAGS), American Cartographic Association (ACA), National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), and the Geographic and Land Information Society (GLIS). ACSM is committed to the advancement of the profession of surveying, mapping, and land information.

The American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS),
serving over 8,000 members internationally, is devoted to advancing knowledge and improving understanding of mapping sciences to promote the responsible application of photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems and supporting technologies.  The local chapter of ASPRS is called the North Atlantic Region.

The Association of American Geographers (AAG)
is a scholarly society of 7,000 members founded to advance the profession of geography and to encourage the application of geographic research in education, government, and business.

The Geospatial Information and Technology Association , GITA, (formerly AM/FM) is an educational organization dedicated to the advancement of automated mapping and facilities management. The associations membership includes 1,700 representatives of utilities, energy, and natural resource companies, government agencies, and other organizations.

The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA)
is a multidisciplinary educational/professional organization of 3,600 individuals concerned with the effective use of information systems technology at the local, regional, state provincial, and federal levels of government.

The National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE)
works to enhance the status and quality of geography teaching and learning. To meet its mission, the NCGE develops coherent policies for all aspects of geographic education; develops, publishes, and promotes the use of curriculum, resource, and learning materials; enhances the preparation of geographic educators with respect to their knowledge of content, techniques, and learning processes; encourages and supports research on geographic education; publicizes the importance and value of geographic education, and cooperates with other organizations that have similar goals.

Geographic Information Systems and Mapping Operations (GISMO)
is a user-oriented group of professionals from NYC agencies, universities, public and private organizations using or learning to use mini- or micro- based GIS. GISMO is a forum to share geocoded data and data processing techniques, software training, news from GIS publications, meetings, vendors, etc. Significant networking has developed and is encouraged.

Conferences

Why Conference?

What is it about conferences that draws thousands of people from around the world to share time?

Having a connection to something larger is often cited as a motivating force for humans. It is a chance to see many different people in different stages of professional expertise: from stu- dents to sales people to scientists.

New developments and attacks on problems are explained and critiqued. Growth is shown and shared.

Conversations flow easily with strangers who have more in common with you than your neighbor.

Steering committees decide the future direction of the professional societies while exchanging accolades for accomplishment.

Rooms filled with people strain to hear the details of technical topics while the exposition floor crawls with excitement as vendors hawk their wares.

Top executives of government agencies and corporations stroll alongside while another presenter nervously scurries to give the final preparation to a slide show.

Social events loom as signals of completion of another day's activity.

Smiles and handshakes. Business cards flash.

Then, before you know it, it's over, and you go back home to your own circus, and plan the next one.
